SEVENTH SHIP ATTACKED

Southeast Asia waters have seen a seventh product tanker attacked and its cargo siphoned since the start of 2015.

In the latest incident the 3,000-dwt Oriental Glory (built 1998) was ambushed by robbers at 0600 local time on Friday.

Thirty perpetrators were said to have boarded the vessel from six fishing vessels about 60nm northwest of Bruit Island, Malaysia in position 03° 34.50’ N, 110° 39.08’ E.

The tanker was then moved to position 05° 22.02’ N, 109° 33.06’ E, about 188 nm northwest of Bruit Island, and 2,500t of fuel oil was siphoned off.

The Malaysian-flagged tanker was en route from Labuan, East Malaysia to Tanjung Manis in Sarawak when the incident occured.

Details of this latest incident came in an alert from the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP) Information Sharing Centre.

In a statement ReCAAP said all crew aboard the ship were safe and the vessel was proceeding to Tanjung Manis for further investigation.

The Singapore-based anti-piracy organisation urged vessels to exercise enhanced vigilance and the littoral States to step up surveillance.
