| IMO Launches Energy Efficiency Portal |
The IMO has launched Glomeep.imo.org - a new website that provides information about energy efficient technologies – covering areas such as machinery, propulsion systems hull improvements and energy recovery.
The portal builds on the work undertaken by IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee to promote technical cooperation and technology transfer relating to improving the energy efficiency of ships.
Technologies are categorized into a number of maturity levels according to uptake across the maritime industry and the degree to which it has been proven.
The website also provides information on the Global Maritime Energy Efficiency Partnerships (GloMEEP) project
GloMEEP is a GEF-UNDP-IMO project aimed at supporting the uptake and implementation of energy efficiency measures for shipping. GloMEEP supports ten lead pilot countries of the project to implement these measures, through:
- Legal, policy and institutional reforms
- Awareness raising and capacity-building activities
- Establishment of public-private partnerships to encourage technology transfer
- Establishment of public-private partnerships to encourage technology transfer
The countries involved are: Argentina, China, Georgia, India, Jamaica, Malaysia, Morocco, Panama, Philippines and South Africa.
Simultaneously, the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) has joined the GEF-UNDP-IMO GloMEEP Project as strategic partner. IAPH will assist the GloMEEP lead pilot countries address air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions in ports. In particular, IAPH will be collaborating with the GloMEEP project on the development of tools that will support the countries quantify air pollutants and GHG emissions in ports as well as assist in the identification of measures to cost-effectively reduce port related emissions.
IAPH joins the GloMEEP project as its third strategic partner, following the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST).
