Animal Protection Measures Proposed for Gulf of Mexico

A U.S. EPA report has found that air pollution at the nation’s ports can be reduced significantly at all port types and sizes through a variety of strategies and cleaner technologies. Implementing these approaches, the report finds, would reduce greenhouse gas and other harmful emissions from diesel-powered ships, trucks and other port equipment.

[Updated] Oily Sheen and Powerful Odor Reported in Vallejo
In Vallejo, California, the Coast Guard is investigating reports of an oily sheen on the water accompanied by a strong odor. The smell was strong enough Tuesday night to prompt local firefighters to issue a shelter-in-place order, and several residents reported difficulty breathing.

U.S. Clarifies Ballast Water Convention Stance
Rear Admiral Paul Thomas, assistant commandant for prevention policy at the U.S. Coast Guard, has welcomed the news that the 2004 International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments (Ballast Water Management Convention) has been ratified and will now enter into force in September 2017.
